Exterior wall cladding is a practical and aesthetic way to cover the external walls of a structure or building. It can be made from a variety of materials such as timber, composite, or charred wood. The purpose of cladding is to provide insulation and protection from the elements, while also adding architectural appeal to the structure. The installation often depends on the profile of the boards and the material selected. Essentially, cladding is an easy way to combine functionality with luxury. Quickly and easily mount the wall cladding, and enjoy a result that is both sustainable and high-quality at an optimal price-performance ratio.
We have three main types of cladding:
Within each category, you will find a wide range of wall cladding options, not only in terms of the type of timber, composite, colour, and size but also in terms of profile and grain.
Choosing the right cladding option can be a challenging task, given the diverse appearances and unique qualities each product offers for various projects. Each product not only has a different appearance but also different qualities that makes it better suited for some projects. Whether you seek durability, low-maintenance options, or the timeless charm and character of timber, Timber Ireland has got you covered.
Browse our extensive Timber Cladding range, where you will find an array of impressive options, such as Cedar Cladding and Iroko Cladding. Cedar is known for its durability and weather resistance, which makes it an excellent choice for external spaces. Meanwhile, Iroko wood combines exotic wood with timeless elegance and remarkable strength, making it well-suited for window and door cladding projects.
Our Composite Cladding range consists of an ingenious and sustainable combination of wood fibres and plastic resins, resulting in a low-maintenance and cost-effective solution suited for any space. Designed to withstand the harshest of weather conditions, this composite material offers outstanding durability and easy installation.
For semi-tropical or northern conditions, Charred Timber Cladding stands out as the ideal material. Embodying ancient tradition, beauty, and resilience, this wood type originating from Japan provides excellent protection against environmental challenges, ensuring your building’s longevity and timeless appeal.

Cladding can be installed in several ways, depending of course on the type of cladding chosen. In general, the application is simple and fast. We have compiled our installation and maintenance guides for easy access, so be sure to read them carefully before assembly as installation varies across cladding types. Below is a quick and easy overview of which types of profiles you are likely to come across at Timber Ireland.
Tongue and Groove (T&G) profiles are synonymous with easy installation. In Ireland, it is popular not only for its classic and timeless appearance but for the seamless and visually appealing results it offers for both exterior and interior walls. Tongue and Groove Cladding is the joining of boards by the “tongue”, or an edge, on one side, into a groove on the adjacent board. This edge-to-edge method creates a secure and seamless connection, with a tight interlocking joint resulting in a flat surface. No need for nails!
As with T&G exterior cladding, shiplap cladding can be installed either vertically or horizontally. The Shiplap Cladding method leaves a smooth finish, with tightly locked and slightly overlapping boards creating a water-shedding facade. The result has a distinct appearance of visual grooves between boards with a pleasing pattern. Shiplap Cladding is a traditional method that was used to make ships waterproof.
The durability of cladding largely depends on the material used and the care given to it over the years. Composite Cladding is an excellent choice if you are looking for low-maintenance cladding that is both durable and designed for longevity. Due to its mixture of wood fibres and plastic, it looks and feels like wood, while being exceptionally resistant to moisture, rot, insects, warpage, and more.
On the other hand, timber’s lifespan can be extended with regular maintenance and proper care. Hardwoods such as cedar and oak can last between 20 and 25 years, whereas softwoods such as Douglas Fir can last between 10 and 15 years. Ultimately, periodic cleaning and regular maintenance are the key ingredients for cladding that will last through the years.
The maintenance needed depends on the type of cladding used. Composite cladding, for example, does not need more intensive care than simply wiping the surface with warm, soapy water and then rinsing it, or scrubbing and soaking affected areas. Most timber cladding types, however, may need more maintenance. Maintenance of timber can be as easy as cleaning stains and spots with water and soap, but can often include an exterior wood cladding treatment such as oiling or staining. These may be appropriate for timber that has faded over time as well as to generally prevent rot, insects, and other effects brought on by time and exposure to the elements. Cleaning, oiling, and staining are not time-consuming and will help prolong the life of your cladding.
For wall cladding in interior spaces, we recommend using dry wood. Wood cladding is a timeless choice as it brings warmth and texture to indoor spaces. It can be applied to accentuate specific areas of your interior or cover entire walls or even ceilings, adding both character and charm to any room.
Additionally, Tongue and Groove Cladding is a great interior cladding option for both beginners and experienced builders, due to the ease of installation and seamless finish it provides. Overall, cladding interior walls does not need to be difficult. With the right materials and assembly, it can easily create a warm and cosy atmosphere in living spaces and bedrooms alike. Woods such as oak and cedar can even work as bathroom wall cladding.
