What is Iroko Cladding?
The timber comes from African iroko wood, a hardwood from the tree species called Chlorophora Excelsa. Its dense grain, strength, durability, and natural beauty make it a highly-sought after material choice. It is naturally rich in tone, with a distinct yellow colour that makes it a stunning addition and highly suitable for any exterior or interior project.
What are the benefits of Iroko Cladding?
- Iroko is the ideal choice for cladding around windows and doors
- The wood has a dense grain, making it resistant to decay
- It can last up to 50-60 years with proper maintenance
- Simple to install directly onto walls and other surfaces
Iroko Tongue and Groove
At Timber Ireland, we carry our iroko planks in the tongue and groove variant. Tongue and groove is a user-friendly profile for assembling cladding. On one side of the wood planks, there is a “tongue”, or protrusion, that slots into an adjacent groove in the next plank. This means that no nails are necessary for installation – easy and effortless, without the need for professional tools when joining boards.
Is iroko good for cladding?
Yes – iroko is an extremely durable timber, making it highly effective for external cladding. Its natural, golden-brown beauty and easy installation also make it an ideal wood for all kinds of projects suited for beginners and experienced builders alike. Installing it is easy, as it can be applied directly to walls and other surfaces. It is an attractive option for both private and commercial building projects.
Is iroko a hardwood or softwood?
The timber comes from a large hardwood tree from the west coast of tropical Africa. Its colouring, ease of maintenance, and excellent strength have given it much attention as a building material. It is a popular choice for both internal and external use, thanks to its unique grain and many benefits.
Is iroko wood sustainable?
Iroko wood is 100% recyclable, which makes it an excellent environmentally-friendly choice. Its sustainable nature is also reflected in its exceptional lifespan of up to 50 years when utilised as cladding. This means, that less wood will be used over time, as it will need minimal replacing over the decades. It is a lasting investment that can last multiple generations of home or building owners.
Iroko maintenance
Iroko is a low-maintenance Timber Cladding option. It does not require any treatment to keep its soundness and can be left as it is, due to its weather- and time-resistant properties. However, if colouring is desired, it is best to get a factory pre-finished timber. Moreover, using stainless steel fixings, such as nails or screws, can improve its performance and longevity.
If you are looking for the properties of Iroko but in a different colour, then Charred Timber is a great alternative! Charred Timber also has an extremely long lifespan and requires almost no maintenance.
