What is Microshades Cladding?
Microshades Cladding is a treated wood that has the natural beauty of redwood and cedar, with the durability and protection of MicroPro® technology. It is a softwood timber that has been colour-treated with a hardwood tone. It offers the best of both worlds – exceptional durability combined with a beautiful appearance!
How is Microshades made?
Microshades is a trademark for timber that has been treated with a wood preservative consisting of micronized copper, making it a great alternative to more traditional Timber Cladding types. This treatment shields the micronized timber from the harmful effects of wood-rotting fungi and wood-destroying insects.
What are the benefits of Microshades Cladding?
Discover why Microshades could be the ideal choice for your project:
- Low-maintenance: requires little maintenance over time
- External application: well-suited for exterior use, such as garden or house facades
- Durable: provides protection against the elements, rot, insects, and fungal decay
- Versatile: ideal for cladding residential or commercial buildings and outdoor structures
- Weather-resistance: withstands extreme weather conditions, including freezing winters, hot summers, damp periods, and strong winds
With its durability and resilience, Microshades is a reliable solution for enhancing the longevity of outdoor structures while requiring minimal upkeep. If you are looking for a hardwood with similar qualities, take a look at our European Oak Cladding.
How to cut Microshades wood?
If cutting is necessary, it is crucial to exercise caution while employing high-speed cross-cut saws or mechanical sanders. Additionally, any area exposed through drilling or cutting must be treated again with a cut end preservative to maintain the effectiveness of the preservation. Neglecting this step will result in a diminished efficacy of the preservative. Generally, it is essential to refrain from cutting or altering preserved wood, as doing so could reveal the unpreserved wood within.
Microshades fasteners and hardware
Metal products such as fasteners, hardware, and flashing may undergo corrosion when they come into direct contact with wood treated with copper-based preservatives. To prevent premature corrosion and potential failure, it is crucial to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations for all metal products.
When used for exterior applications, ensure that the fasteners and hardware comply with the manufacturer’s guidelines and meet the building codes for their intended purpose.
Just like other sound design and construction practices, it is not advisable to use Micronized Timber in situations where trapped moisture or water can be present. In scenarios where constant, repetitive, or prolonged wet conditions are expected, exclusively employ stainless steel fasteners.
How to install Microshades Cladding?
- It is generally recommended to nail boards with the bark side facing up (with the annual rings pointing upward) to reduce the risk of splitting. However, if there is a visible defect in the wood, the best face should be placed facing up.
- To maintain structural integrity, it is advisable to fasten thin boards to thicker boards.
- When screwing near the edge or end of a board, it is good practice to drill pilot holes for your fasteners. This helps minimise splitting.
If the wood has been exposed to rain and has become wet, it is recommended to butt the decking boards together during construction. As the wood dries, some shrinkage may occur. On the other hand, if the wood is dry, leave space between the boards to allow for expansion during wet weather. Micronized timber, such as Microshades, can be glued with the most commonly used adhesives once it is dry. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
